Dot NAME Domain Name Registrations

Started in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain extension is the only one supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level domain names remained operational.
